Blue Jay is a 2016 American romantic drama film directed by Alex Lehmann in his narrative feature debut. The screenplay was written by Mark Duplass, who also stars as the male lead alongside Sarah Paulson.
Synopsis
The story follows Jim (Mark Duplass) and Amanda (Sarah Paulson), former high school sweethearts who unexpectedly run into each other at a grocery store in their small California hometown after 20 years of no contact. Jim has returned to renovate and sell his late mother's house, while Amanda is visiting her pregnant sister. They catch up over coffee and jelly beans, which eventually leads them back to Jim's childhood home. Surrounded by old mixtapes, letters, and memories, they temporarily regress into their carefree teenage selves. However, as the night progresses, the long-buried grief, unresolved emotional baggage, and the heartbreaking reason behind their initial breakup inevitably resurface.
Key Features
Black-and-White Aesthetic: The film is shot entirely in rich, minimalist monochrome. This choice visually mirrors the themes of nostalgia, memory, and the bittersweet contrast between past and present.
Mumblecore & Heavy Improvisation: As a quintessential indie project, the film relied on a tiny 10-page outline rather than a traditional script. The actors improvised a vast majority of the dialogue over a rapid seven-day shoot.
Intimate Two-Hander: The roughly 80-minute runtime is almost exclusively carried by the immense chemistry and performances of Paulson and Duplass. Veteran actor Clu Gulager makes a brief, memorable cameo as a local liquor store owner.
